Akiiki Babyesiza

Dr. Akiiki Babyesiza is specialized in the field of higher education in Sub Saharan Africa, particularly Eastern Africa.

She majored in African Studies, Islamic Studies, Jewish Studies at the University of Cologne and studied Arabic at the University of Cairo. Subsequently Babyesiza worked for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in the Regional Office for Africa in Nairobi, Kenya and in the Department of Development Cooperation in Bonn, Germany.  In 2013, she obtained her doctorate in Sociology from the University of Kassel, where she worked as a research associate for the international project “Higher Education Reform across Europe: Governance & Funding” at the International Centre for Higher Education Research Kassel.

Following the completion of her doctorate, Babyesiza joined the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) at the University of Bayreuth as a postdoctoral researcher. At BIGSAS she established the workgroup “Higher Education and Society in Africa” and started her postdoctoral research project “Development and Entrepreneurship at African Universities”.

Her current research project focuses on the emergence of the model of the entrepreneurial university, its history and organizational practice in Sub Saharan Africa.

Her doctoral thesis was published as “University Governance in (Post-) Conflict Southern Sudan 2005-2011. The Nexus of Islamism, New Public Management and Neopatrimonialism” in 2015.
