About
„There is a campaign to discredit the press in the United States, led by the president himself. In many ways it is succeeding. That is a troubling development, and it is happening in other countries at the same time. In the U.S. the campaign to discredit journalists could not succeed without a long term erosion of trust in the media, in the political class, and even in "the news" itself. These are problems bigger than what Trump is doing when he attacks the press. In Germany, the term “Lügenpresse” (lying press) resurfaced during the 2014 anti-immigrant movement in Germany to discredit the media reporting. A similar phenomenon can be seen throughout the entire European continent. This event will compare perspectives across the American, German and European settings.“
Jay Rosen is an American author and journalist. He teaches journalism at New York University. He is also the author of PressThink, a blog about the fate of the press in the digital era and the challenges involved in rethinking what journalism is today, which he introduced in 2003. Since 2017, Rosen is director of the Membership Puzzle Projects, funded by the Knight Foundation and Democracy Fund. It studies membership models for sustainability in news. Rosen is also an active press critic with a focus on problems in the coverage of politics.
David Schraven is a German journalist. He is founder and publisher of Correctiv, a nonprofit investigative newsroom. From 2010 until 2014 he used to be head of investigations at Funke Mediengruppe, one of the largest European media holdings for regional newspapers. From 2007 until 2014 he was treasurer of the German association of investigative journalists “Netzwerk Recherche”.
