About

"Developments in 2016 and 2017 marked a watershed after an era in international relations which was determined by the end of the Cold War and subsequent events. The prospects of new constructive relations between Russia and the West have diminished to the lowest point since the early 1980s. On the one hand, Russia seems to play an important part in internal political infighting in Western societies. On the other hand, the West still seems to consider the Russian role as a Constitutive Other. There is no common political project between Russia and the West, as there is no serious intellectual work about how to reshape the relations. Against the backdrop of the overall deterioration of international rules and the weakening of strategic stability, detachment and restraint seem to be the only rational choice for Russia. The country needs time and efforts to formulate a new model of development and a credible vision of the future."

During the Lunch Talk, Fyodor Lukyanov and Professor Alexei Miller will discuss the results of the report “Restraint instead of Assertiveness: Russia and a New Era in World Politics”. The report was prepared as the concluding part of the project "Russia in International Relation - in Search for Role and Identity", funded by the MacArthur Foundation. The first report was published in 2016 and can be found here.
