Akwugo Emejulu is Professor of Sociology at the University of Warwick. Her research focuses on the political sociology of race, class and gender as well as the grassroots activism of women of color in Europe and the United States.
She is the co-principal investigator of the Open Society Foundation research project “Women of Color Resist”, a six-nation (Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and the UK) study exploring how women of color are organizing for equality in a moment of far-right backlash across Europe.
Before entering academia, she worked in a variety of grassroots roles – as a community organizer, a trade union organizer, and a participatory action researcher – in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
In 2020, Emejulu received the Flax Foundation’s Emma Goldman Award for her contributions to feminist social science in Europe and was inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.
She is the author of several books including "Precarious Solidarity" (forthcoming 2023, Manchester University Press), "Fugitive Feminism" (forthcoming 2022, Silver Press), "Minority Women and Austerity: Survival and Resistance in France and Britain" (2017, Policy Press), and "Community Development as Micropolitics: Comparing Theories, Policies and Politics in America and Britain."(2015, Policy Press). She is co-editor of "To Exist is to Resist: Black Feminism in Europe" (2019, Pluto Press).
