We are witnessing the highest level of global displacement in recorded history, with no end in sight. Wars, inequalities, climate change, and the desire to be free or to be, drive thousands to begin their lives anew in a foreign country every day. A new nation is growing across the borders. It is the “nation of strangers” – a nation that has to learn to live differently every day. Although the citizens of this nation might soon form the majority of the world population, they are still considered an exception.
But what if this is a chance to reconsider the concept of belonging, untangling it from the nation? Can we reimagine a new home for our fluctuating times? When the soil is gradually flooded due to climate crisis, is it still relevant to connect the sense of belonging to the land?
Can we reimagine citizenship for Europe and beyond? Is it possible to reorganize our way of living in our times of disintegration? Or can a new kind of nomad living be a way out for the future?
The panel will bring together those who think beyond the conventional definitions of belonging, citizenship, and land ownership:
