About

In his book "The Girl from Human Street: Ghosts of Memory in a Jewish Family", published in January 2015 (Knopf), Roger Cohen explores his family history. Roger Cohen was born after World War II to a Jewish family in London. For the first time he now describes how the war affected his family and his personal life. The story’s main theme is his relationship with his mother, who suffered from mental illness and repeatedly attempted suicide. In order to find out more about the background of his family history, Roger Cohen travelled to Eastern Europe. His accomplished family biography is the remarkable result of this journey.

"Beautifully crafted. . . . [Cohen] reveals how the threads of [his] legacy of displacement are woven together, all the while making visible tears in the fabric never to be fully mended." - The Washington Post

"Powerful storytelling. . . . Sometimes breathtaking. . . . Written with a generosity that is truly humane." - The New York Review of Books
